There was a time not too long ago when the terms SEO and content marketing were used interchangeably. Was it because people didn’t know any better, or because they were overlapping in many cases is a debate for historians. The fact of the matter is that this is no longer the case, which begs a new question, namely “which is better now?” The answer is not going to be to some people’s liking, but there is not much we can do about it – this is how the world of Google (and search engines in general) works.

 

SEO has become the more technical part of a digital marketing strategy. It deals with keywords, tags, etc. It makes sure that you don’t get a penalty, and if you do, it’s your ticket out. It roots out bad links and ensures that the good ones remain so that your site can thrive. However, it no longer does much more aside from that.
Content marketing, on the other hand deals entirely with your content, as the name suggests. It couldn’t care less about keywords and such, but it is the reason anyone would share your content and thus increase your rank. The more people share, the more your audience grows, hence the more your rank increases. It’s really simple and doesn’t require lots of technical knowledge. All you have to do is create great content and then share it on social media. If you do well, other people will also share it and you will receive traffic.

 

Ideally, you want to focus on both aspects as they are both invaluable. If you focus on SEO alone, you will probably fail. In case you want to choose only one, content marketing is your best bet, but good luck in case your get penalized.
